Mucosal Transfer

A semisolid modification of ESELI™ technology has been developed to adhere to mucosal tissue of the lips and gums to deliver specific actives directly into the systemic circulation, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract and first-pass metabolism. This results in rapid onset of action and convenient drug delivery. Various activities have been successfully delivered to patients and/or consumers in this manner. Products tested to date have primarily been in the form of a traditional lip balm format or in a semi-liquid state via a slant tube applicator (similar to lip gloss). In addition to drug delivery, the benefits of adherence to tissue helps provide an extended protective coating of the vermilion border, which is the area where ordinary skin with hair follicles is replaced by a thin hairless, well vascularized keratinized epithelium.
