The BioViscid platform was also used to create a patented, long-acting product developed for the dairy cow and horse hoof treatments. This product sustains wet, dirty, and hostile environments while providing continuous drug or active availability under extreme conditions. This product replaces the environmentally dangerous copper sulfate baths commonly used on dairy farms. Typically, cattle must walk through a footbath every time they go into the milking parlor to prevent the spread of digital dermatitis, but the copper sulfate is gone almost as soon as the hooves get wet.

Proof of Concept Studies on Motega’s BioViscid-SA™ treatment, conducted by a university, demonstrated a clinically and statistically significant reduction in digital dermatitis (hoof lesions) and lower lameness scores in cows. Motega’s product, named Hoof Protex, survived for 7 days on the hoof with a single application and reduced the amount of disease by 90% or more. This same technology can be used for horses as well. This patented product is ready for licensing.

This technology has also been used to produce postsurgical topical treatments for animals and is currently in development to provide a long acting treatment for ear infections and similar issues with companion and commercial animals.
